Do not get discouraged, you're a nice person.
What you should do is to give gifts to their neighbors, such as chocolate cake or something, organizing a party, buy beer, junk food and put a match futball, remember when I was new to the neighborhood?, I did a party and after then the whole neighborhood was there, or you can go with the neighbor and tell you how the kid from 8, ¿am I could give a cup of sugar? or more things until I know you well.
